Membership Types - Which Membership is Best for You?

The Alberta Kinesiology Association offers several different membership types to best suit each member's individual situation.


Professional Kinesiologist Membership (Class A)

The Professional Kinesiologist membership is a good choice for an individual who is employed or practicing in Alberta as a kinesiologist, or who wishes to become employed or practicing.

Professional liability insurance is required to hold this type of membership, and it can be acquired during the application process.

Scope of Practice: The scope of practice of kinesiology as defined by the AKA is broad and allows for our professional members to promote integration of the latest evidence-based approaches through continuing education.

Professional Liability Insurance: Obtain insurance to cover your practice easily through our provider, Prolink.

Free Legal Advice: Legal advice that extends beyond your kinesiology practice. Email admin@albertakinesiology.ca for contact information.

Career Advancement: Receive regular updates on the latest opportunities for work, volunteering, and mentorship in kinesiology.

CKA Membership: Membership with the Canadian Kinesiology Alliance (CKA) is included, and members can enjoy CKA vendor discounts.

Free Resources: Webinars, forms, resources, and tools to help your practice. Access will become available once you are a member under the members tab.

Direct Billing through TELUS Health eClaims: Professional Kinesiologist members of the AKA can sign up for TELUS Health eClaims and use the service free of charge to offer direct billing in their practice. Once you are a member, register here for free.

Provisional Professional Kinesiologist Membership (Class A)

The Provisional Professional Kinesiologist membership is a good choice for an individual who meets all of the requirements for a Professional Kinesiologist membership except for the 300 practical hours. Once the hours are acquired, they may switch their membership type to a Professional Kinesiologist membership.

Individuals who apply for this type of membership must have a Supervising Professional Kinesiologist in place.

Professional liability insurance is required to hold this type of membership, and it can be acquired during the application process.

Non-Practicing Professional Kinesiologist Membership (Class A)

The Non-Practicing Professional Kinesiologist membership is a good choice for a kinesiology professional who is not currently practicing due to medical or parental leave, working in an administrative or leadership role, or is non-practicing for other reasons not yet specified.

A member that has this type of membership must not be in search of employment or engaged in the practice of kinesiology in Alberta as defined by our Scope of Practice, and thus not require professional liability insurance as a kinesiologist.

A Non-Practicing member can choose to change their membership to a Professional Kinesiologist membership at any time.

Practicing Student Membership (Class B)

The Practicing Student membership is a good choice for any student of kinesiology who has completed at least 2 years of study and plans on gaining practical experience within the field of kinesiology. These members must be under the direct supervision of a Professional Kinesiologist, and may only deliver services in areas they have completed appropriate training in.

Professional liability insurance is required to hold this type of membership, and it can be acquired during the application process.

Student Membership (Class B)

The Student membership is a good choice for any student of kinesiology who is interested in learning more about kinesiology as a profession in Alberta, and connecting with the kinesiology community.

Affiliate Membership (Class B)

The Affiliate membership is a good choice for any non-kinesiologist professional who has an interest in learning more about kinesiology as a profession in Alberta, and connecting/networking with the kinesiology community.

We encourage professors, researchers, employers, and individuals passionate about kinesiology to acquire this membership to stay informed about the profession and collaboration opportunities.

There are no requirements to apply for an Affiliate Membership.
